Opening ceremony

‘THE MANY-FACED IN COLOUR. Russian Empire in Photographs by Prokudin-Gorsky’

Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky was a pioneer of colour photography, an outstanding scientist and photographer. It is thanks to his works that we can see Russia on the eve of the disaster of World War I and two revolutions. It is an honest, unbiased and vivid depiction of his home country. It is no coincidence that his photographs were included in the first textbook on Homeland Studies, which was to form a love of homeland among students back in the day.

This exhibition aims to show the country he witnessed through his portraits. It is notable that he tried to capture all sorts of people. Regular folks interested him just as much as Leo Tolstoy or Fyodor Chaliapin.

The faces of a girl from the village of Topornya, or a Bashkir wayfarer, or a camelman from Turkestan will help visitors catch a glimpse of the country lost in 1917.
