The Tsar’s Bride (opera)

A premiere performance on the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. The Tsar’s Bride is an opera in four acts by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, based on the drama by Lev Mey adapted by Ilia Tyumenev, and directed by Vyacheslav Starodubtsev. The opera’s world premiere took place on 22 October 1899 at Mamontov’s Private Russian Opera in Moscow. The Tsar’s Bride is a realist lyrical drama filled with poignant moments on stage. At the same time, the opera’s distinctive feature lies in the predominance of rounded arias, ensembles, and choruses based on beautiful, malleable, and penetratingly expressive melodies.
