As part of the cultural programme of the 8th Eastern Economic Forum, on
10 September Vladivostok will host the world’s first concert featuring an
artificial intelligence system as a soloist. Symphony No. 1, written by
musician and composer Pyotr Dranga and called Cosmos, will be performed by
Sber’s neural network together with the Grand Symphony Orchestra at the
Mariinsky Theatre Primorsky Stage.
“Composing has been the basis of my creative path for
many years now, and I see the Cosmos symphony as a unique attempt to combine
the possibilities of artificial intelligence and human technology for good.
This moment is very close, so now is the ideal time for such an experiment, the
main thing is to approach everything with a kind and open heart,” commented Pyotr Dranga.
Symphony No. 1 for Artificial Intelligence and the
Grand Symphony Orchestra has a classical structure and consists of four parts.
In the first and second parts, the
solo part will be performed by virtuoso musicians from China, and there will be
pre-written parts in which the neural network model from Sber SymFormer will
control the expressiveness of the performance right on stage using a virtual
synthesiser. And in the third and fourth parts, the audience will already hear
real improvisation by SymFormer in real time.
Pyotr Dranga suggested that Sber’s neural network
should rethink a symphony, modifying and supplementing it – this way, the
artificial intelligence will become a full-fledged participant in the creative
process and a co-author of the composition. This unique project is a great
opportunity to demonstrate advanced technologies and developments in the field
of artificial intelligence created in the Russian Federation.
A ‘techno-matryoshka doll’ will become an additional
element of the performance and a unique art object symbolizing a neuro-musician.
The centre of the musical installation will be SberBoom, a powerful smart
speaker with a virtual assistant Salyut, which will show all guests of the
event how deeply AI technologies have penetrated the sphere of creativity and
art.
“Traditionally,
the events of the Vladivostok Seasons Festival of Culture occupy an important
place in the programme of the Eastern Economic Forum. One of the key objectives
of the EEF is to strengthen ties between Russia and Asia Pacific countries, and
cultural events are a good support to this end. I am sure that such a
significant event on a global scale as a joint performance of artificial
intelligence and academic musicians will contribute both to strengthening
Russia’s status as one of the technological leaders in the world and to
strengthening partnerships with all stakeholders,” said Ekaterina Ivanova, Head of the Creative Projects Directorate at
the Roscongress Foundation.
