Hong Kong business delegation holds working meeting with Russian Ministry of Health officials

Representatives from the Russian Ministry of Health and a business delegation from Hong Kong held a bilateral meeting on 26 September at the ministry’s National Medical Research Center for Preventive Medicine. The delegation from the Ministry of Health was headed by State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Health Dmitry Kostennikov. The business delegation’s visit to Russia is being supported by the Roscongress Foundation.

The meeting was also attended by Director of the Department of Science, Innovation Development and Management of Biomedical Health Risks Igor Korobko and Director of the Department for Infrastructure Development and Public–Private Partnership Andrey Kazutin. The officials and delegation members discussed the healthcare system in Russia, the health of Russian citizens, opportunities for investment in the Russian healthcare sector, the latest achievements in the healthcare industry using artificial intelligence and other technologies as well as issues related to research laboratories in Russia.

Kostennikov said that Russia and China have seen successful development in their relations in healthcare as part of agreements reached by a governmental commission. This governmental commission includes a subcommittee on cooperation in the healthcare sector.

“Relations between our healthcare systems are developing at a bilateral level: this cooperation concerns both medical organizations as well as medical universities”, Kostennikov said.

In turn, head of the Hong Kong business delegation Mr. Ronnie Chan stressed that he and his colleagues are interested in investing in Russian medicine: “We are ready to discuss these issues. We are particularly interested in your further actions to increase life expectancy. As you know, China has now overtaken Iceland and Japan in terms of life expectancy”.

Kostennikov said that Russia’s main objective now is to increase life expectancy to 80 years by 2030. He also briefly described the Healthcare national project that has already been established. “This project includes eight federal projects. One of them aims to develop medical care for foreign citizens – medical tourism – since a relatively large number of foreigners come to the Russian Federation for medical assistance. In Russia for medical care come residents of Europe, and the rest come from Southeast Asia and Africa”, Kostennikov said.
