Russia to Help Kazakhstan in Restoring Tiger Population

The Republic of Kazakhstan will have a stand at the 2nd International Tiger Forum, which will be held on 5 September 2022 in Vladivostok, to present a programme to restore tiger population the region.

Twelve years ago, the first International Tiger Forum took place in St. Petersburg, at which the Global Tiger Recovery Programme was adopted at the level of prime ministers, with the aim of doubling the number of tigers in the wild by 2022. It was at this Forum that the government of Kazakhstan announced its readiness to return the predator to Central Asia.

Seven years later, a reintroduction programme was prepared, and the following year the 415,000-hectare Ile-Balkhash State Nature Reserve was established, covering part of the Ili River delta, floodplain, saxaul forests and wetlands on the southern shore of Lake Balkhash. Since then, the first phase of the tiger programme – territory preparation – has begun. In the coming years, Kazakhstan and Russia are planning to cooperate closely on implementing the programme. A Memorandum of Understanding is planned to be signed at the 2nd International Tiger Forum. Earlier, during the 17th Forum of Interregional Cooperation between Russia and Kazakhstan, which took place on 30 September 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin invited the President of Kazakhstan Kasym-Jomart Tokayev, to provide advisory assistance in the restoration of the tiger population in Kazakhstan.

At the 2nd International Tiger Forum, the Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan will give a detailed report on the stages of programme implementation, the work that has been done since the establishment of the reserve, and further plans concerning the arrival of the predator. Kazakhstan’s stand will present South Balkhash territory, the place of future release of tigers. A mock-up, as well as video and photo presentations will allow getting a detailed picture of the future ‘home’ of the tiger.

The Forum is organized by the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation, the Amur Tiger Centre, and the Roscongress Foundation.
