Advisor to the Russian President and Executive Secretary of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) Organizing Committee Anton Kobyakov met with Prime Minister of Myanmar Min Aung Hlaing on the sidelines of the EEF.
Russian President Vladimir Putin noted during the EEF 2022 that trade between the two countries increased by 140% in the first half of this year.
“Myanmar is our long-standing, reliable partner in Southeast Asia. I think next year we have an anniversary – 75 years [since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries]. Our relations are developing positively,” Putin said during a meeting with Hlaing at the EEF.
During the meeting, Kobyakov and Hlaing discussed the possibility of Myanmar participating as a guest country in the EEF in 2023 as well as the organization of joint events dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
“We need practical solutions and supplies to boost trade between our countries, and our country’s possible participation as a guest country in the EEF 2023 will broadly demonstrate Myanmar’s investment opportunities for the business community around the world. For their part, the port of Vladivostok and railway infrastructure could become new points for the development of our relations for us in order to integrate as much as possible into the agenda,” Hlaing said at his meeting with Anton Kobyakov.
Russia and Myanmar signed an updated strategy for economic cooperation on 3 August. Myanmar is interested in supplies of liquefied natural gas and other energy carriers from Russia, as well as in expanding the presence of Russian oil and gas companies.
“Russia is a key supplier of energy and agricultural products to Myanmar, and there is also significant potential for diversifying trade between the Russian Federation and ASEAN*, with which Russia became a full-scale dialogue partner in 1996. Since that time, Moscow’s relations with the bloc, whose positions on key global and regional issues have always been close in many respects, have rapidly developed,” Kobyakov said.
Since the two countries established diplomatic relations, more than 7,000 citizens of Myanmar have received education in Russia, 500 of whom are engaged in scientific activities, which indicates the level of friendly bilateral relations.
* ASEAN unites Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia. Russia joined the organization in 1996.

Amur Region Government Discusses Preparations for AmurExpo 2024
Members of the Amur Region government discussed preparations for the Russian-Chinese AmurExpoForum 2024, which will take place on 24–26 May on both banks of the Amur River. For the second year in a row, based on instructions from Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Forum will serve as an offsite platform of the Eastern Economic Forum. The Forum will be organized with the support of the Roscongress Foundation.
