Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk hosted ‘Transition to natural gas a
motor fuel: challenges and opportunities’, a large economic conference in
preparations for the 6th Eastern Economic Forum. The event brought in Governor of Sakhalin
Region Valery Limarenko; Deputy Chairman of Sakhalin Region Government Vladimir
Sidorenko; Deputy CEO of the Roscongress Foundation and Director of the Eastern
Economic Forum Igor Pavlov; representatives of the Russian Ministry of Energy
and Ministry of Industry and Trade, Gazprom, gas equipment suppliers, as well
as employees of dealership centres, transportation companies, and the Far East
Investment and Export Agency.
The conference focused on the Russian transport
segment transitioning to natural gas motor fuel, as well as challenges and
opportunities related to this transition.
“Today, natural
gas motor fuel is successfully used in over 80 countries. Sakhalin Region has
resources and technology to successfully implement this project," said Governor
of Sakhalin Region Valery Limarenko.
“This
conference is a major event for the Russian Far East and for the whole country.
Transport running on compressed and liquefied natural has a great potential.
Participants and guests of the conference and the exhibition could see it for
themselves. We will prepare our suggestions for
the EEF 2020 business programme as a follow-up to Sakhalin Gas Conference,”
noted Deputy CEO of the Roscongress Foundation Igor Pavlov.
Discussions of the natural gas motor fuel transition
continued during the roundtables. It was announced that Sakhalin plans to
switch half of its vehicles to methane by 2024. In order to achieve that, the
island is already setting a chain of natural gas fuelling stations and service
centres, building up the fleet of municipal machinery running on methane and
creating more support measures for those car owners that decided to reequip
their vehicles.
Participants of the project to build the natural gas fuelling
station infrastructure get multiple preferences, including a land plot with no tendering
process, outright grants to reimburse for expenses related to construction and
assembly, as well as purchasing equipment for natural gas fuelling stations
The conference offered a special exhibition where
equipment owners, representatives of production companies, service centres and
dealerships shared features of their equipment and machinery.
The Government of Sakhalin Region and Yandex signed a
cooperation agreement during the conference. The parties agreed to cooperate in
promoting road safety, implement joint environmental initiatives and projects,
and develop information and communications technologies.
The conference helped Sakhalin-based companies find
more partners that produce and service equipment and machinery running on
natural gas fuel.
The 6th Eastern Economic Forum will take
place in Vladivostok on 2–5 September 2020. The event is organized by the
Roscongress Foundation.
