Eastern Economic Forum Organizing Committee Holds Meeting

The Organizing Committee in charge of preparing for and holding the 7th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), which will take place on 5–8 September 2022 in Vladivostok, held a meeting to consider the events of the business programme, the preparation of the Far Eastern capital and the campus of Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) for the EEF 2022, and the organization of exhibition events.

The EEF has been instrumental in attracting investment to the Far East, developing preferential regimes, and creating the most attractive conditions for doing business in the Far East. More than 2,700 investment projects are being implemented with state support in the Far Eastern Federal District, and more than 500 enterprises have already launched operations. The Far East economy has received some RUB 2.7 trillion of investments, and more than 100,000 jobs have been created.

“The Eastern Economic Forum is not just a communication platform to discuss pressing issues. It has become a tool for the development of the Far East. Several steps forward have been made immediately thanks to this tool. This is an opportunity to report on the most important problems of the Far East to Russian President Vladimir Putin. This year’s Forum will be different from previous ones. The Russian Far East’s influence on our country’s development is expanding significantly. The east is becoming the main direction for strengthening the country’s economy and its export potential. Work continues to develop the Far East. The Far East should be as attractive as possible for investors. We need to develop and submit proposals that will retain the priority of investment in the Far East. The macro-region’s importance is growing in the face of the sanctions that have been imposed against us by unfriendly countries. These sanctions, of course, on the one hand, create obstacles in the development of the economy of our country, but, on the other hand, are creating new opportunities, forcing us to acquire new expertise, and requiring transformations in industry, innovation, science, and the quality of education. We will definitely discuss all these issues at the Forum,” Yury Trutnev, Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Plenipotentiary Representative of the Russian President in the Far Eastern Federal District, and Chairman of the EEF Organizing Committee, said in his opening remarks at the meeting.

During the meeting, Adviser to the Russian President and Executive Secretary of the EEF 2022 Organizing Committee Anton Kobyakov noted the large number of Forum delegates this year: “Representatives of Russian and foreign businesses from 46 countries and territories have confirmed their participation. These figures confirm the Eastern Economic Forum’s reputation as a leading international event and discussion platform in the Asia-Pacific region today,” Kobyakov said. He also emphasized that the Forum events will be held in strict compliance with all epidemiological safety measures, and the requirements of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing will be taken into account at the venue.

The key topic of the EEF 2022 will be the development of the Far East and Russia in the new economic and geopolitical conditions, as well as a new format for collaboration between countries in a multipolar world. The main theme of this year’s EEF is ‘The Path To a Multipolar World’. Minister for the Development of the Russian Far East and the Arctic Alexey Chekunkov said that more than 70 business events are planned as part of the business programme. Per tradition, the following country business dialogues will be held: Russia–India, Russia–Vietnam, and Russia–ASEAN. A meeting of the Russia-China Business Council and a conference on investment and trade in the Arctic will also be held on the sidelines of the EEF.

During the meeting, the Organizing Committee paid special attention to additional events that are scheduled to be held as part of the EEF 2022. The 2nd International Tiger Forum will take place on 5 September, the first day of the Forum. Ministers from the following 13 tiger range countries have been invited to participate: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Cambodia, China, North Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, and Thailand. Ministers from Iran, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan have also been invited as honorary guests at the Tiger Forum.

The ‘Welcome to the Far East’ exhibition will be open for EEF participants throughout the Forum. It will feature expositions from several Russian federal executive bodies. The traditional Far East Street exhibition will be held for EEF participants and Vladivostok residents. It will feature exposition booths from 11 regions of the Far Eastern Federal District. The House of Indigenous Peoples, the Tiger House, the Soul of Russia multimedia campus, the Fish Market, and the pavilion of the Tourism.RF Corporation will also be open to visitors as part of the Far East Street exhibition.

In addition to the business programme, EEF 2022 guests will experience an extensive and entertaining cultural and sports programme. The EEF cultural programme will include more than 20 official events, including musical concerts featuring world opera stars, photo exhibitions, and master classes at the central Far East Street venue.

The EEF sports programme will include 15 competitions in 12 sports under the new Vladivostok Open brand. This includes the International Vladivostok Regatta among professional and student teams from Russia, China, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Turkey, and other countries.

Acting FEFU Rector Boris Korobets reported on the status of preparations at the FEFU campus on Russky Island for the EEF 2022. Work is underway to improve the campus, and 1,143 hotel rooms have been renovated. “The preparation of the campus for the Forum is proceeding as planned: work to improve the territory is being completed in addition to repair work on educational, administrative, and hotel buildings. This year, the Primorsky Territory government has allocated a grant for the first time to repair and equip hotel rooms at one of the student dormitories. The subsidy amounted to RUB 75 million. It’s essential that all the furniture remains for our students after the Forum,” Korobets said. He also added that more than 300 FEFU students will be volunteers for organizing the EEF this year, accounting for more than half of all Forum volunteers.

Primorsky Territory Governor Oleg Kozhemyako informed the meeting participants about improvements that are being made to Vladivostok, such as the repair of city roads, the renovation of building facades, and the readiness of hotels to receive EEF participants and guests. A list of cultural organizations and museums that will host events of the Forum’s cultural programme  has been approved. Some 500 volunteers have been selected to work at the EEF 2022 sites.

Upon completion of the Organizing Committee meeting, relevant instructions were given about the preparation of the city’s infrastructure, the hotels of Vladivostok, as well as the Forum venue, taking into account the possible epidemiological situation.
