More than 1,000 applications for a free hectare of land in the Russian Far East were received via the programme’s online portal in the week since the initiative was launched on 1 June 2016.
According to the portal, at the end of the day on 7 June 2016, 1,056 applications had been submitted, and one of these is already at the contract signing stage.
Valentin Timakov, General Director of the Agency for the Development of Human Capital in the Russian Far East, is pleased with the initial results. “In its first week, the Far Eastern Hectare programme has demonstrated that there is steady, significant and growing interest among residents of the Far Eastern Federal District in obtaining plots of land for use free of charge, and the figures – over a thousand applications submitted – provide clear confirmation of that fact”, he said.
Timakov expects to see a gradual increase in interest in the programme among Russians as time goes on. “For now, many potential participants are in no hurry to submit an application for their hectare. They are waiting for the first interim results of the programme to tease out all of the details”, he noted.
Starting on 1 June, plots of land became available in certain municipalities of Russia’s Far Eastern regions, for residents who are legally registered in the region where the pilot project is being implemented. From 1 October 2016, residents of the Russian Far East will be able to claim their own hectare anywhere in the Far Eastern Federal District, and starting on 1 February 2017, all Russian citizens will have the same opportunity.
