The First Race of the SCF Far East Tall Ships Regatta 2018 Took Start

The first race of the SCF Far East Tall Ships Regatta 2018 took the start on 4 September as a part of the 4th Eastern Economic Forum Sporting Programme. Participants are to cover about 600 nautical miles (a little over 1111 km) from Yeosu, the Republic of Korea, to Vladivostok. The race route goes through the Tsushima and Korea Straights, and the Sea of Japan.

On the way from port to port, tall ships are to compete in their own and overall class. So the winner is not always the fastest ship: the efficiency of a crew performance is rated along with the ships’ nautical qualities.

Vladivostok expects the ships’ arrival no later than 9 September for the second race and an extensive cultural programme and sporting events.

The SCF Far East Tall Ships Regatta 2018 is the first tall ships race of the international level to take place in the Russian Far East. The primary goal of the regatta is to boost the interest of the youth in seafaring, to promote a healthy lifestyle, support marine education, and develop international cooperation and good neighbourly relations. Traditionally, the regattas are held under the patronage of the head of the participating states.

The SCF Far East Tall Ships Regatta 2018 is held in the Russia–Japan Cross Years; the arrival of ships to Vladivostok coincides with the 4th Eastern Economic Forum. Tall ships from Russia, Japan, China, the Republic of Korea and other countries participate in the competition.

Sail Training International and Tall Ships Association Russia are the organizers of the regatta. PAO Sovcomflot (SCF) is the title sponsor of tall training ships regattas.
