Northern Sea Route Prospects to Be Presented to the EEF 2018 Participants

Northern Sea Route (NSR) prospects as an important transit corridor will be presented to Russian and foreign participants of the 4th Eastern Economic Forum, which will take place in Vladivostok on 11–13 September 2018.

It is anticipated that at the Eastern Economic Forum the representatives of the Maersk Company will talk about the scope of container cargo transportation along the main sea route of Russia in the Arctic. In September of this year Maersk vessel will pass along NSR. The ‘Venta Maersk’ vessel with the cargo of frozen fish, produced by Russian companies in the Far East, will sail from Vladivostok to St. Petersburg. This project will be the first ever transfer of a cargo vessel along the Northern Sea Route. Based on the results of this passage, the safety of navigation and the availability of cargo base on the NSR will be assessed.

Maersk is the Russian branch of the integrated transport and logistics company A.P. Moller-Maersk, which is considered a global leader in container shipping. The company employs roughly 88, 000 people across all operations in 130 countries. The company is represented in the Russian Far East since 2003 and during this time has created an extensive network of maritime services there. Maersk also participates in a project of transporting Russian fish in refrigerated containers from onshore enterprises in Kamchatka and other initiatives in the Russian Far East. CEOs of the company will participate in EEF 2018.

“Shipping Russian frozen fish from the Russian Far East is mainly done by train. The transition to the Northern Sea Route can become an alternative to the traditional course. The project is important for the development of competition in the transportation of Russian fish and ensuring the availability of products for consumers in Russia,” said Tom Hyldelund, CEO of OOO Maersk.
