Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics to be presented at Eastern Economic Forum

Two sports panels have been included for the first time in the business programme of the Eastern Economic Forum, which starts on 11 September in Vladivostok. The session ‘World Sport Today: A View from the Asia-Pacific Region in the Run-Up to Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022’ will be held on 12 September. The discussion will open with remarks by Russian Presidential Aide and Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Council for the Development of Physical Culture and Sports Igor Levitin.

“One of the ideas of the Eastern Economic Forum is to expand cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, and this session is fully consistent with this objective in the sports world. The APR has hosted three Olympics in a row. How this factor can be used for the development of Russian Far East, what formats of sports exchange are of interest to the countries of the region, and which integration projects are the International Olympic Committee and leading sports federations interested in are among the main themes of the session, which is the result of interaction between the Ministry of Sport, the Russian Olympic Committee, and the Roscongress Foundation. I would like to note that the session will feature speeches by Chinese Minister of Sports Gou Zhongwen, who also heads the Chinese National Olympic Committee, and Director of the Media and Communications Department of the Beijing 2022 Organising Committee Chang Yu. This will be Gou Zhongwen’s first visit to Russia and, in fact, the first presentation of the 2022 Winter Olympics in our country”, Deputy Director of the Roscongress Foundation Georgy Bryusov said.

The discussion participants will include Russian Minister of Sports Pavel Kolobkov, Russian Olympic Committee President Stanislav Pozdnyakov, IOC Associate Director for Relations with the Olympic Movement James MacLeod, International Judo Federation President Marius Vizer, Three-Time Olympic Champion in Greco-Roman Wrestling and Hero of Russia Alexander Karelin as well as Sumo legend and Special Representative of the President of Mongolia for Mongolian-Japanese cooperation Dagvadorj Dolgorsuren.

Another highly pressing issue for Russian sports will be discussed on 11 September during the session ‘PPP in Sports: New Opportunities for Investors’, which will open with remarks from Russian Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets.

“The transition from budgetary funding to public-private partnerships is a new challenge and creates new prospects for the further development of the sports industry. A substantive dialogue will be held during the session about which projects have already been implemented using the PPP mechanism, whether these projects can be replicated, what requirements the banking sector has for sports infrastructure projects, what kinds of support potential investors in sports infrastructure can expect from the regions, and how the legal framework for enhancing investment appeal can be further strengthened”, Deputy Director of the Roscongress Foundation Georgy Bryusov said.

The session will be attended by Russian Minister of Sports Pavel Kolobkov, Russian Minister of Construction, Housing, and Utilities of the Russian Federation Vladimir Yakushev, Head of the Republic of Buryatia Alexey Tsydenov, Head of the Udmurt Republic Alexander Brechalov, SME Bank Chairman of the Board Dmitry Golovanov, State Duma Deputy Dmitry Svishchev, and Public-Private Partnership Development Center Chairman Pavel Seleznev.
