The Roscongress
Foundation and RUSAL, one of the world’s largest aluminium producers, have
agreed to offset the carbon footprint of the Eastern Economic Forum 2024, which
takes place from 3 to 6 September in Vladivostok. This was made possible thanks
to RUSAL’s forest climate project. The Company transferred a part of the carbon
units generated by the project to protect forests from fires in Krasnoyarsk
Region.
“Environmental protection and
environmental issues are always a priority for the Eastern Economic Forum: the
EEF traditionally hosts a large number of events dedicated to sustainable
development. The Forum’s carbon footprint will be offset with the help of units
received by RUSAL as a result of the implementation of the Forest Climate
Project. I hope this cooperation will become a great example for other events
and we will be able to make a real contribution to achieving the goals of
minimizing our environmental impact,” said Igor Pavlov, First Deputy CEO
of the Roscongress Foundation and Director of the Eastern Economic Forum.
Transfer
of carbon units to offset the carbon footprint of EEF 2024 is carried out using
the ‘Nature’s Thread’ platform. The platform uses the principle of marketplace
to allow transactions with carbon units and units of quota fulfilment. ‘Nature’s
Thread’ is designed for companies and organizations that implement climate
projects, as well as for those who plan to cover their carbon footprint through
the use of carbon units and performance units. The platform is operated by the
Roscongress Foundation.

international and national sustainable development goals, but is also reflected
in specific actions, programmes and projects. Taking environmental and climate
aspects into account when organizing events is another way of contributing to
the preservation of the planet for future generations. We are pleased that
RUSAL’s climate projects help achieve sustainable development goals not only
for us, but also for the country and our partners,” said Elena Myakotnikova,
RUSAL’s Director for Sustainable Development.
Eastern
Economic Forum became carbon neutral for the
first time in 2023.
Carbon
units (CU) are a verified result of a climate project, expressed as a mass of
greenhouse gases equivalent to a tonne of carbon dioxide. A company can offset
the carbon units against its own carbon footprint or transfer them to other
stakeholders.
RUSAL
implements both natural and technological climate projects. For example, the
company has registered three climate projects in the Russian register of carbon
units: to protect forests from fires in Krasnoyarsk Region and to improve the
energy efficiency of the Krasnogorskaya TPP of the Urals aluminium smelter,
including in heat generation and raw water treatment. A portion of the
verified carbon units were allocated to offset the carbon footprint of the
BRICS Climate Agenda in the Current Environment Forum, which took place in
Moscow on 29–30 August 2024.
The Eastern Economic Forum is being
held on the campus of Far Eastern Federal University. The Eastern Economic
Forum is organized by the Roscongress Foundation.

EEF 2024 offsite event in Chita addresses cooperation between Russia, China, and Mongolia
The Trans-Baikal Territory hosted the New Horizons Foreign Economic Forum, an offsite event of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) 2024, on 19–20 July. Roughly 1,500 business representatives, government officials, and experts from Russia, China, Mongolia, and Iran took part in the Forum. The central event was the plenary session ‘International Cooperation between Russia, China, and Mongolia’. Representatives of the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and the Arctic, the Federation Council, and the State Duma, regional leaders, and foreign diplomats discussed joint investment projects, the development of tourism, and other opportunities for collaboration between the countries.

Our hearts demand change: how to adapt international standards, structures, and institutions to modern conditions
Russian media technologies play a pivotal role in uniting society, creating platforms for communication and the expression of opinions. The younger generation demands modern approaches and tools for engagement. International institutions require a fundamental rethinking and reboot to meet new global challenges. It is important to recognize that the future belongs to those who are ready to adapt and change the rules of the game in global politics and economics. This was the conclusion reached by the participants in the ‘Our Hearts Demand Change: How to Adapt International Standards, Structures, and Institutions to Modern Conditions’ session held at the Eastern Economic Forum.
