Vladimir Putin: judo and sport prove that you can’t stand still if you want to achieve victories

Russia and Mongólias national teams placed joint first in the overall standings at the 3rd International Vladivostok Jigoro Kano Cadet Judo Tournament for boys and girls, which took place as part of the sporting programme of the 5th Eastern Economic Forum. President of Russia Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister of Japan Shinzō Abe and President of Mongolia Khaltmaagiin Battulga attended the tournament and took part in the award ceremony. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi was the guest of honour at the games.

I want to turn to our guests first of all and thank them for coming to Russia to participate in this competition. I would like to thank the International Judo Federation and of course my colleagues, heads of state and government, who have found the time to come here and enjoy this wonderful sport. I wish all the best to the winning athletes. This is a youth tournament and the fact that the boys and girls have achieved this result at their age is fantastic. But sport in general, and judo in particular, have proven many times that you cant stand still if you want to achieve real and sizeable victories. I would therefore like to wish all of you, boys and girls, success in sport and on your journey in life. Hard work and talent will lead the way to a wonderful future, and sport will always be there to guide you and help you in all of your endeavours, said Vladimir Putin.

This year the tournament had a new format the team that collected the most points across the boys, girls and mixed team competitions was declared the winner. The Mongolian team placed first in the girls standings, while the Russian team shared third place with Japan. Russia defeated the Mongolian team in the final of the mixed tournament. In the final of the boys tournament, which was held in the presence of the heads of state, the Russian team beat Mongolia 6:0, leaving both teams with 220 points from the boys tournament. Japan took third place with 200 points.

The guests of honour at the competition were President of the International Judo Federation Marius Vizer, Deputy Prime Minister Yury Trutnev, who headed the organizing committee for the tournament, Aide to the President of the Russian Federation Igor Letivin, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Olga Golodets, Minister of Sport Pavel Kolobkov, Chairman of the Russian Olympic Committee Stanislav Pozdnyakov, President of the Japanese Olympic Committee Yasuhiro Yamashita, Russian Judo Federation President Vasily Anisimov, President of the International Judo Fund Arkady Rotenberg, President of the European Judo Union Sergey Soloveychik, head coach of the Russian national judo team Ezio Gamba, FIFA President Gianni Infantino and President of the Russian Football Union Alexander Dyukov.

Workshops and autograph sessions for children from Primorye Territory, which have already become an established part of the tournament, were held by Olympic judo champions Tagir Khaybulaev, Arsen Galstyan and Mansur Isaev, and Olympic judo medallist Tamerlan Tmenov.

The Jigoro Kano Cadet Judo Tournament was organized by the Ministry of Sport, the Russian Judo Federation and the Primorye Territory administration. The Roscongress Foundation served as the events operator.
