The Russian Federation and the Republic of the
Union of Myanmar are planning to sign an agreement on visa-free regime at the 9th
Eastern Economic Forum. EEF 2024 will be held on 3–6 September in Vladivostok.
It is organized by the Roscongress Foundation.
"The Russian Ministry of Economic Development, as a
tourism regulator, supports the establishment of a visa-free regime with the
countries of the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Most of the agreements are far
along in preparation. The visa waiver programme with Myanmar is one of the
priority tasks. We plan to sign the agreement on the sidelines of the upcoming
Eastern Economic Forum," said Dmitry Vakhrukov, Deputy Minister of
Economic Development of the Russian Federation, as quoted by the press service
of the ministry.
On 7 September 2022, President of the Russian
Federation Vladimir Putin met with Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State
Administration Council of Myanmar, on the sidelines of the 7th
Eastern Economic Forum. The parties discussed issues of bilateral co-operation.
On 11 September 2023, on the margins of the 7th
Eastern Economic Forum, Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation
Anton Kobyakov met with representatives of the delegation of the Republic of
the Union of Myanmar. They discussed new forms of mutual settlements,
cooperation in the energy sector and the implementation of joint projects in
various areas. Separately, the participants in the meeting discussed issues
related to simplifying the operations of Russian enterprises in Myanmar,
harmonizing the legislation of the two countries, organizing import and export
supplies, and creating a roadmap for cooperation.
In addition, Russia and Myanmar restored direct
air links in 2023. On 5 September 2023, the first scheduled flight of Myanmar
Airways International arrived in Novosibirsk, flying the Yangon – Mandalay –
Novosibirsk route.
Earlier, in November 2022, in Myanmar's capital
city of Naypyidaw, the Department of Foreign Economic Relations of the Ministry
of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations of the Republic of the Union of
Myanmar (MOFIR) and the RK-Investments Development Assistance Fund, an investment
platform of the Roscongress Foundation, signed a memorandum of understanding.
The purpose of the memorandum is to strengthen and develop comprehensive
Russian-Myanmar relations in all areas of interaction: trade and economic,
investment, humanitarian, educational and cultural fields. The priority areas
include support for initiatives in the sphere of trade exchange of various
groups of goods, including energy carriers, minerals, fertilizers, agricultural
products, investment cooperation, as well as the development of a mechanism for
mutual settlements within the framework of foreign economic activity between
the two countries.
