Development of bilateral Russia–United Arab Emirates cooperation discussed in Moscow

A meeting between Anton Kobyakov, Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates to Russia Mohammed Ahmed Al Jaber took place in Moscowyesterday, dedicated to the subject of bilateral cooperation in areas including key business events in Russia and around the world.

“This December the United Arab Emirates will celebrate 50 years since the creation of its federation, and together our countries will celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. Back in 1971, the then-USSR was one of the first countries to recognise and begin building a relationship with the young nation. The rapid progress that we have seen from the UAE across all areas of life in the past decades is truly impressive. It is heartening to see that to this day, Russia and the United Arab Emirates maintain a stable and trusting political dialogue underpinned by deep, multifaceted connections at the highest and high levels,” noted Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation Anton Kobyakov.

During the meeting, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates to Russia Mohammed Ahmed Al Jaber noted that even during the pandemic the two countries continue to strengthen their trade and economic relations. In 2020, trade volumes between the Russian Federation and the UAE amounted to USD 3.27 billion, a 78% increase compared to 2019. Already in the first half of 2021, the Russian-Emirati trade volume has reached USD 2.53 billion, outperforming the previous year’s figures by 79%. In January the United Arab Emirates registered the Sputnik V vaccine.

Russian-Emirati cooperation in the sphere of investments and joint projects is developing, with large-scale events held in Russia supporting this trend. As part of this, during the Eastern Economic Forum held in Vladivostok the FESCO transport group and DP World Russia signed an agreement for strategic cooperation in joint projects aimed at developing the Commercial Port of Vladivostok.

For their part, Anton Kobyakov and Mohammed Ahmed Al Jaber discussed current progress in the creation of an international hawking centre in the Kamchatka Advanced Special Economic Zone, first announced at EEF 2019.

In 2021, an official delegation from the UAE visited the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Taking part in the event were the Minister of State for International Cooperation of the UAE, managing director of Expo 2020 Dubai Reem Al Hashimy, as well as the Minister of Economy Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri.

“The United Arab Emirates have historically actively participated in key business events in Russia, including the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. We have already begun preparations for SPIEF 2022, and, considering the anniversary of our countries’ cooperation, we plan on taking a more active part in the event. This year, the UAE are initiating 50 new national investment projects aimed at the all-round development of the UAE, a strengthening of our position amongst the world’s successful economies. We are interested in developing an international dialogue, presenting our projects on the world stage, and participation in SPIEF opens up many such opportunities,” noted the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates to Russia Mohammed Ahmed Al Jaber.

In October 2021 the World Expo 2020 exhibition will open in Dubai, expected to be the largest in history. The Russian Pavilion business program will include over 50 events over the course of 6 months. The main topics will include: energy, technology, finance and investments, urbanism, space, transport, climate, education, and, of course, medicine and healthcare. One of the main events of the Russia Forum Pavilion will take place on the 3–5 December 2021 – an international conference on investment and prospects of international business partnership with Russia.

The possibility of hosting a number of large Russian-Emirati business events dedicated to the 50-year anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries is currently under discussion, as well as a more active participation of the UAE in key Russian business events, including SPIEF 2022 and SPIEF 2023.

During the meeting the two sides also agreed to create a project management office, whose goal will be to support the development of partner relations between the countries that will allow a transition towards practical steps in executing a number of joint projects in various economic sectors.
