Russian-Chinese Joint Scientific Expedition of Far East to Kick Off at EEF 2019

The official send-off ceremony for the 7th Russian-Chinese scientific expedition that will explore the Far Eastern seas and the Pacific Ocean on the Academician M.A. Lavrentyev research vessel will take place during the 5th Eastern Economic Forum with the support of the Roscongress Foundation. The event is scheduled to be attended by Russian Minister of Science and Higher Education Mikhail Kotyukov, a delegation from the Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources, and the leadership of the First Institute of Oceanography of the Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources (FIO MNR).

The expedition is being organized by the Ilyichov Pacific Oceanological Institute of the Far Eastern branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the FIO MNR and will take place in accordance with the work plans of the Russian-Chinese Centre for the Scientific Study of the Ocean and Climate. The research will be carried out by young scientists from both countries, who will hear lectures and receive training based on traditional and the latest research methods during the expedition.

Russia and China have conducted joint research expeditions since 2010 as part of cooperation in the research and use of the oceans. The studies carried out during the seventh expedition will have applicable significance for assessing the oil and gas resources of the Pacific Ocean and predicting climate change in the region and will further strengthen the leading role of Russian scientists in Pacific research.

The seventh Russian-Chinese expedition will kick off during the year of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and China and will serve as an important step in the development of bilateral cooperation in scientific affairs.

The 5th Eastern Economic Forum will take place in Vladivostok on 46 September.
