Preparations under way for Chukotka’s exposition at Far East Street

Chutkotka is to unveil an exposition entitled “A World of Strong People” at the 4th Eastern Economic Forum’s Far East Street. The exhibition will run from 11 to 16 September in Vladivostok.

The centrepiece of the exposition will be a 6-metre cube symbolizing the region’s icy terrain. Visitors to the pavilion will get to see a number of short films replete with 3D images and special sound effects. They will introduce visitors to Chukotka’s nature, the traditions held by its indigenous peoples, and the economic and social projects being implemented in the region.

Another highlight will be a scale model of “The Sign of the Sun” in the urban locality of Egvekinot, marking the intersection of the Arctic Circle and the 180th meridian – the so-called “Russian Greenwich”.

The exposition will also feature the theme of “Traditional Meets Modern”. A traditional yaranga (a tent-like dwelling) will be displayed alongside a “yaranga 2.0” – a modern equivalent for reindeer herders. The regional government commissioned two such yarangas this year. A Russian company specializing in the construction of dome-shaped housing designed the mobile home and presented it to reindeer herders and sea hunters. This new yaranga was made using durable windproof material and equipped with a domestically produced wind power generator and solar panel. It means that reindeer herders will no longer need to carry with them a large supply of fuel. The wind and sun provide enough energy for electrical appliances and to charge radio batteries.

“Conditions in the tundra and the coast are pretty tough. It is our objective to improve these conditions as much as possible for people working there. We believe that the introduction of the yaranga 2.0 will mark a sea change in this regard,” said Roman Kopin, Governor of the Chukotka Autonomous Area.

Chutkotka’s exposition at the Far East Street will cover over 900 square metres in total. Above the exposition, a kinetic installation entitled “dance of the wind”, made from thousands of pieces of foil, will cover virtually the entire area. As it moves in the breeze, it will simulate the effect of clouds.
