Natural Resources Minister Sergei Donskoi invites Mongolian officials to take part in SPIEF and EEF 2018

The 21st meeting of the Russian–Mongolian Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation took place in Moscow on 28 February. Mongolia was represented by members of the Mongolian Government, including Deputy Prime Minister Ulziisaikhan Enkhtuvshin. During the meeting, Sergei Donskoi, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation and co-chairman of the Intergovernmental Committee, invited the Mongolian delegation to take part in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) and the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in 2018.

Trade between Russia and Mongolia jumped 47% to nearly USD 1.4 bn in 2017, Mr. Donskoy reported. This reflects increased exports to Mongolia of chemical products, machinery and equipment, metals and metal products. Agricultural sales also grew, by 10%, reaching almost USD 190 m. This means that the two countries have overcome the negative bilateral trade trend seen in 2015–2016.

Sergei Donskoi and Ulziisaikhan Enkhtuvshin signed the minutes of the meeting confirming the parties’ commitment to complete, in the shortest time possible, the preparations for of an intergovernmental agreement to promote interregional and cross-border cooperation. They also expressed readiness to sign an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the sphere of energy. Mongolia’s participation in SPIEF and EEF 2018 will help boost trade and investment ties between Russia and Mongolia.

In 2017, the Mongolian delegation to the Eastern Economic Forum was led by President Khaltmaagiin Battulga. It was his first visit to Russia following his election in July 2017. On the sidelines of the Forum, Mr. Battulga held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and took part in the roundtable ‘Russia –Mongolia: A Meeting Point in the Russian Far East’.
