Gastronomic future of Russian Far East on display at EEF 2024 Regions Market Regions Cuisine

The Eastern Economic Forum 2024 will feature an all new Regions Market / Regions Cuisine, organized by Primorsky Territory, at the Far East Street exhibition from 3 to 8 September. A team of chefs specializing in the culinary traditions of the Far East will share the fruit of many years’ labour and a menu full of dishes from the Regional Tourism Centre Far East Cuisine festival project.

“One of the tasks of the Eastern Economic Forum and the Far East Street exhibition is to introduce the participants and guests of the Forum to the culture and traditions of the Far East.  Sophisticated and ubiquitous local cuisine at international events is the best way to express what makes the Far Eastern Federal District unique. At the EEF in 2018, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin made Far East-style crepes with President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, that is to say they made them with seafood. That first ever culinary masterclass given by the heads of state took place in the Russian Seafood exhibition pavilion. The culinary traditions of the Far East are an integral part of Russia’s image and national pride,” Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yury Trutnev said.

The Regions Market / Regions Cuisine will be located next to the Primorsky Territory pavilion and will include mobile test booths where visitors can sample the products of regional companies.

“The suggestion to hold a Regions Market / Regions Cuisine at EEF 2024 came from Yury Trutnev. Our region has what it takes to make this market interesting for exhibition guests. We’re working on the concept and content right now,” Governor of Primorsky Territory Oleg Kozhemyako said.

According to the head of the region, Vladivostok has spent the last three years creating a calendar of regular street food events. The ‘O! Mega Taste’ pollock and ‘On the Crest’ sea scallop festivals have been held two years in a row, along with the ‘5 Seas, 3 Oceans’ festival of Russian port cities and festivals for flounder, smelt, honey, tomatoes, and so much more.

Restaurateurs and chefs will also be spicing up the Regions Market / Regions Cuisine with Far Eastern variants of Russian cuisine and ‘russified’ Asian dishes. The ‘Far Eastern Cuisine: Russia Meets Asia’ food court is a place where participants and guests of the Eastern Economic Forum 2024 can come together with the residents of Vladivostok to taste Russian crepes with local fish, caviar, condensed milk, and Far Eastern pine nuts, as well as crab and pollock buns, and halibut, crab, and wapiti dumplings. Chefs will also prepare Far Eastern fish soup and solyanka, kukumaria skoblyanka, Far Eastern seafood pilaf, and Russian fisherman’s steak with kelp, sea bream, and pollock caviar, crab salad, and Far Eastern herring. Desserts will include Pavlov’s Far Eastern honey cake with actinidia. The Regions Market / Regions Cuisine menu will feature plaice in Asian sauce, crispy harumaki pancakes with crab and pollock, and drinks made from the wild herbs of the Far East.

The venue programme will include culinary masterclasses and gastronomic presentations by Vladivostok’s best chefs. Regions Market / Regions Cuisine participants will include Free Port of Vladivostok resident restaurant Zuma, the ‘Tokyo’ restaurant chain, and the restaurant of the Aquatoria water complex.

Vladivostok ice-cream factory Ursa, the largest producer in the Far Eastern Federal District, will be on hand to show off its products.

The Visit Primorye Tourist Centre will be managing the Regions Market / Regions Cuisine. Author and head of the ‘Gastronomic Map of Russia’ project, curator and co-organizer of 55 festivals of Russian cuisine Ekaterina Shapovalova will be hosting and curating the venue.

“For Russia, life at sea is a dream but not a fairy tale. The Russian regional seafood industry should be developing faster than major seaside resorts and tourist infrastructure. Food festivals are the most expedient way for us to make our dream a reality and set a course for the future. And the future for us and our children and grandchildren is the opportunity to eat Russian cuisine everywhere in Russia, from Vladivostok to Kaliningrad. A street festival is an inexpensive, easy way to try new things. Even just five years ago we couldn’t have dreamed of bringing such a festival from the regions to the capital because of a lack of mobile technology and ready solutions. In the summer of 2024, Moscow’s street festivals and open food courts will welcome modern Russian food, including the food of the Far East, to compete with well-known foreign alternatives. We look forward to sharing Far Eastern favorites with everyone from 3 to 8 September at the Regions Market / Regions Cuisine,” Ekaterina Shapovalova said.

Special ‘Primorsky Territory’ and ‘Primorsky Scallop’ art installations will be set up near the Regions Market / Regions Cuisine.

The Eastern Economic Forum 2024 will be held on 3–6 September in Vladivostok on the campus of the Far Eastern Federal University. The Eastern Economic Forum is organized by the Roscongress Foundation.
