A meeting was held in Moscow to prepare the first Falcon Day
International Forum to be held on 10 September in Vladivostok. The event is
operated by the Roscongress Foundation. The participants discussed the business
programme and the development of a framework declaration of intentions for the
conservation of the gyrfalcon, an invitation campaign and the first falcon
auction.
“We have a fairly wide
invitation campaign. Among those invited are Russian and foreign officials,
representatives of business and non-profit organizations. An important part of
the Forum programme will be the adoption of a framework declaration on the
conservation of gyrfalcon, which will contribute to the further development of
international cooperation in conservation. To date, eight countries have
supported the draft declaration,” emphasized Anton Kobyakov, Advisor to the
President of the Russian Federation and Executive Secretary of the Eastern
Economic Forum Organizing Committee.
It was noted at the
meeting that the business programme of the Forum will include discussions on
the applied use of falcon species, the scientific basis for the conservation of
rare falcon species, as well as discussion of successful practices of different
countries to conserve and restore populations of gyrfalcon, peregrine falcon,
saker falcon, and other species. Commercial use of such birds, measures
necessary for their conservation and ways to reduce impact on the falcon
population will be the main topics of the plenary session of the Forum.
Another addressed topic
was the organization of the first falcon auction, which will be held by the Russian
Auction House jointly with the Kamchatka Falconry Centre and the Roscongress
Foundation with support from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment
of the Russian Federation. Representatives from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar,
Bahrain, and Kuwait are expected to participate in the event. The auction will
make it possible to demonstrate the advantages of a legal and professional
approach to breeding, training, buying and selling falcons, and to draw the
world’s attention to the issue of preserving rare falcon species. The auction
lots will include gyrfalcons, saker falcons and peregrine falcons, which were
bred in Russian nurseries. A significant part of the auction proceeds will be
used to support the programme of population restoration.
In turn, in the Falcon
House, which is planned to be constructed at the ‘Far East Street’ exhibition,
Forum guests will be able to see several trained falcons. Each bird will be
accompanied by a professional falconer. Visitors will also learn more about the
peculiarities of falcons, the threat of gyrfalcon extinction, support measures
and the history of falconry.
The Falcon Day
International Forum is designed to become an international expert platform for
comprehensive dialogue and attracting the attention of government officials,
experts and the scientific community to the issues of conservation, protection
and increase in the population of birds of prey and rare bird species,
including falcons. Starting from 2023, the Forum will be held annually in
Russia.
