On 10 September, the 8th Eastern Economic Forum (organized by the
Roscongress Foundation) will host an international scientific and practical
conference entitled Colonialism in the East and Its Impact on the Modern World.
This event will focus on the negative impact of the West’s colonial policy, the
role of national liberation movements in Asian nations, and modern
manifestations of neocolonialism (including in science and education).
“The false narratives
around there being no alternatives to the Western model of development and the
historical predetermination of the West’s dominance in international affairs
have already done much damage and caused significant suffering to all of
humanity. That is why it is so crucial today to collate the experience of
national liberation movements in Asian nations, analyse the role of the Soviet
Union and its partners in dismantling the colonial system, and focus on
examples of intergovernmental cooperation between non-Western countries. It is
also vital to develop alternative principles for a world order based on mutual
respect, sovereignty, and genuine equality in international relations,” said
Sergei Naryshkin, Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian
Federation and Chairman of the Russian Historical Society.
The conference is set to welcome experts from Russia
and other countries. Attendees will include Ruslan Gagkuev, Chairman of the
Board of the Russian Historical Society and Executive Director of the History
of the Fatherland Foundation; Boris Korobets, Rector of the Far Eastern Federal
University; Yuriy Kulchin, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences,
Chairman of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Science, and
Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Kyi Shwin, Rector of the Yangon
University of Foreign Languages (Myanmar); Nikolay Kradin, Director of the
Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Peoples of the Far East
at the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Academician
of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Binod Singh, Director of the BRICS
Institute; Carlos Tabunda, Director of the Center for Russian Studies at the
New Era University (Philippines), and Ji Xianbai, Vice Dean of the School of
Area Studies at Renmin University of China.
The conference is being organized by
the Russian Historical Society; the Far Eastern Federal University; the
Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Peoples of the Far East
(part of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences); and the
Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is being held with
the support of the History of the Fatherland Foundation and Russian Railways.
The Forum
will also host the opening of an exhibition entitled Colonial Policy and the
Anti-Colonial Struggle in Asian Nations. This historical and documentary
initiative has been prepared by the Federal Archive Agency of the Russian
Federation in cooperation with the Russian Historical Society, the Institute of
Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the State Museum of
the East. It is being supported by the History of the Fatherland Foundation and
Russian Railways. The exhibition is
dedicated to the fight against colonialism in Vietnam, India, Indonesia,
Cambodia, Korea, Myanmar, and the Philippines.
The 8th Eastern
Economic Forum will take place on 10–13 September on the campus of the Far
Eastern Federal University.
