11 August 2022
The debut
tournament of the International SUP Surfing League will be held on 27–28 August
in Vladivostok as a part of the sports and entertainment programme of the
Eastern Economic Forum. A new format of mass competitions will unite
professionals and SUP surfing amateurs. More than 250 people from 12 countries
will simultaneously start the race in the Amur Bay. SUP surfers from China,
Korea, India, Iran, Thailand, Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and
Kyrgyzstan will come to Vladivostok.
“We are
working out the details of the SUP Surfing League because we see its potential
to become a new sports and tourism product. Large-scale competitions in triathlon,
running, and other formats of overcoming oneself in picturesque locations have long
become a trend of event tourism. We decided to project this onto the water. SUPs
have rapidly gained popularity as a type of active recreation on the water, and
SUP surfing competitions, or races on SUPs, can become a spectacular television
product. Last year, with the support of the Roscongress Foundation we held the Russian
Championship in Primorye Territory, and now we will present a new series of
international mass competitions at the EEF 2022. The SUP Surfing League will start in
Vladivostok. We are working together with other cities of Russia as well as other
friendly countries to host the next stages of the cup. SUP Surfing League can
become a centre of attraction to the Far East and has great international
potential,” said the president of the Russian Surfing Federation Ilya Vdovin.
Elena
Prokhorova, the first World SUP Surfing Champion from Russia will take part in
the debut tournament of the international league. Last year she took gold in
sprint and bronze in 18 km race at the world championships in Hungary. Additionally,
Elena Surkova and Dmitry Sudakov, the winners of Russian championship held as
part of EEF 2021, will take part in the race.
The topics
of developing an international SUP Surfing League, creation of surfing centres
in Kamchatka, and other opportunities for these sports to promote the Far East
will be continued in the programme of the 7th Eastern Economic Forum,
which will be held 5–8 September.
The sports and entertainment programme
of the 7th Eastern Economic Forum will be held under the brand name
Vladivostok Open and will combine events in 12 different sports. The operator of the Vladivostok Open is RC-Sport,
a sports platform of the Roscongress Foundation.
Full Vladivostok Open programme is available on the official website of the Forum: forumvostok.ru/.
