The oceans are an important component of human economic activity and a frequent subject of scientific research. A recent study published in the Current Biology journal reports that only 13% of the world’s oceans – which cover more than 70% of the planet’s surface – remain unaffected by human activity. According to researchers from the University of Queensland, the marine wildlife ecosystem is characterized by high levels of biodiversity and large numbers of endemic species that must be protected against the devastating effects of human activities.
In particular, marine reserves and marine protected areas are now being created to address such global problems as overexploitation of living marine resources, climate change, and pollution of the oceans with hazardous substances and industrial waste.

The problems associated with preserving the oceans and seas as well as creating and operating the reserves will be addressed by guest experts.

Social communication in various formats is a tool for promoting social ideas, shaping public opinion and models of responsible behaviour, and involving people in constructive civic initiatives. In order to develop effective and modern social communications in Russia, the Roscongress Foundation and the Art, Science, and Sport Charitable Foundation have launched the Centre for the Development of Social Communications. The first ever flight of the Russia hot air balloon over Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe, took place on 28 July 2018 as part of the ‘Raise Russia’ project. The project received support from the Presidential Grants Foundation as part of the humanitarian and educational ‘Russia in Search of Ideas’ project. The Russian national flag and the flags of all the territories and regions in the country were depicted on the balloon’s envelope. Guest participants will discuss the idea behind and significance of the ‘Russia in Search of Ideas’ project and other communication projects.

In 2018, the Green Planet Charitable Foundation, with the support of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment of the Russian Federation, is creating a unique natural and landscape historical and cultural attraction called ‘Russia in Miniature’. This educational project will be built in the Kislovodsk National Park, Russia’s largest natural landscape park.

Project participants will talk about the feasibility of observing even the most remote corners of Russia in one place and the reasons why such initiatives can help to instil a love for the history of their native region and the country as whole in the younger generation.

According to the Development of Healthcare state programme, life expectancy in Russia must reach 76 years by 2025. This means that conditions which promote active ageing must be created today. The healthcare system, social services, and cultural and recreational facilities must all be reorganized. The most important task, however, is to promote an active lifestyle among the elderly, changing traditional perceptions and patterns of social behaviour. In this regard, the experience of Japan and other Asian countries, where there are unique traditions surrounding longevity and the social usefulness of the elderly, would be relevant.

Today, we are witnessing steady growth in women’s participation in economies throughout the world, helping to promote socioeconomic wellbeing and tackle demographic and social issues in the countries concerned. Increasing access to education, introducing digital technologies, and implementing programmes to overcome gender inequality all enable women to realize their creative, entrepreneurial, and managerial potential in various sectors of the economy. However, a number of obstacles to the fully fledged development of women still exist in the form of stereotypes regarding their role and opportunities compared to men, and the qualitative participation of women in the labour market. According to Grant Thornton International, Russia’s score on the Gender Inequality Index has not changed significantly over the past three years (68.1% in 2015 and 68% in 2017), the wage gap stands at 30%, and women lead only 26 organizations included in RBC’s index of the 500 largest companies.

How can broadening the opportunities open to women in business, the economy, and other areas contribute to economic growth, the sustainable development of society, and social innovation?

Ensuring equal access to public facilities and services for people with disabilities, and creating an environment that facilitates their integration into the society and improves their quality of life is one of the most pressing challenges faced by government social policy. However, simply building the appropriate infrastructure is not sufficient to enable people with disabilities to fully engage. It is necessary to create a culture where people with disabilities are treated appropriately and, more importantly, where people with disabilities feel included and able to live an active lifestyle.
