Far Eastern Federal University to open ice and fire labs to mark centenary of engineering education

The two laboratories, one of which will do ice research, while the other will focus on the pioneering technology of combustion and thermal power engineering, will be opened at the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) in 2018 to mark the 100th anniversary of engineering education in the Far East.

The ice laboratory will study the qualities of ice and its interaction with various materials, according to Alexander Bekker, director of the FEFU School of Engineering. He said the new laboratory could also be used for modelling ice loads on construction elements, as well as the icing of structures and vessels – all this being needed to develop Arctic resources. The University plans to build a small ice pool for such experiments. Part of the laboratory is already in operation. Once fully up and running, it can be used for more complicated and detailed research.
