Russia–Iran: Expanding Cooperation Formats

Anton Kobyakov, Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation, met with Kazem Jalali, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Russian Federation, in Moscow.

“Today, special conditions are emerging for a serious expansion of bilateral cooperation. The process of Iran's admission to the SCO continues. The next step will be the signing of a Memorandum on Iran's commitments to membership in the SCO within the framework of the SCO Council of Heads of State on September 15-16 in Samarkand. In accordance with this document, Tehran will have the opportunity to begin joining the fundamental SCO documents, primarily the SCO Charter, as well as participate in meetings of all SCO working bodies,” noted Anton Kobyakov.

Relations between Iran and the EAEU are developing as provided by their temporary agreement. The Russian party is actively working to ensure a long-term basis – a free trade zone between Iran and the EAEU.

Flagship projects – Busher nuclear power plant and Sirik heat power plant – play an important role in this process. At the same time, Russian businesses are enjoying a comfortable environment in Iran: simplified border control and removal of logistical barriers. Iran businesses will be able to take up a significant number of niches that are freeing up.

“Implementation of the North–South international transport corridor, which is a signature project for us, will accelerate the economic ties between the two countries. It will give an impetus to the development of trade among Russia, Iran, countries of the Caspian Sea and countries of the Persian Gulf,” shared Kazem Jalali.

Within the framework of the last St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, for the first time in the history of the SPIEF, the Russia-Iran business dialogue was organized jointly.
